Up! Up and Away!~Lydia's 1st Purple Moon exhibition closes Monday July 6th...

I absolutely enjoyed working with the artists in both Phase One and Phase Two of Lydia's 1st Purple Moon.  It is always a challenge not unfamiliar to most artists to get their work out there to be viewed.  The purpose in Rhythm & Hues @ 1501 has been from a standpoint of caring. To give both new, emerging and yes even established, seasoned working artists an opportunity a window a moment to express themselves.

I was not expecting when I proposed to HRI Properties back in Nov 2014 to set up some art for a few weeks while waiting their new tenants Dunkin' Donuts to come in to open up that 8 months later we would still be here!  Many thanks you are issue routinely to both companies as we happily accomodate.  It has been a win-win for all parties.

We operate with zero operational money outside of my ability and skill to find a way out of no way!  No I do not get paid for this, I am purely volunteering.  There have been moments when I had planned to close down because as with anything there will always be detractors; ones who play armchair quarterbacks or resent the fact you put it all out there.

My intentions were for my fellow senior neighbors to have something lovely to look at as they came off the elevators and for the pedastrian traffic as well as the tourist riding our streetcars when they see this historic building and its seasoned tenants they have a sight to behold!

I plan to do as such with the upcoming "Changed Waters:Thrown Rocks, Building Castles" opening August 1-Sept 7th.

Quilting continues! We're excited to have more time to work on creations that will hang, not only at Ashé, but also at the Galerie 1501, a pop up gallery located at 1501 Canal Street . How's that for motivation?   The focus in the name change with the classes becoming part of the Ashe's regular lineup is on Lydia, Biblical figure, who was a seller of purple clothShe was very hospitable Christian woman, entrepernurial, creative, quite prosperous, and a visionary. She sold her wares  to the rulers of her time, the clergy and the wealthy.

 

 

The color purple, in ancient times, was and still is a difficult process to produce.  Having that skill allowed Lydia to provide not only for herself sn d her household, but the community around her.  That is why the renaming of the classes as such is appropiate.

 

 

The talented quilting class participants are still creating incredible pieces. Bring your imagination and join in the fun for a series of quilting workshops led by visual poet artist Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney. These workshops will provide participants with opportunities to incorporate their own compelling personal stories as they produce vibrant, jazzy, contemporary, quilted textile collages. Finished quilts will be formally exhibited at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center opening March 3-April April 24,2015 entitled "Standing in the Shadows (no more)". 

 

 

 It will also have a second component at the  Galerie  1501 on Canal Street located in the historic Texaco building.  That exhibition entitled "Lydia's 1st Purple Moon: A Seasoned HeART is located at 1501 Canal Street from March 10-May 10,2015. supported in goodwill by the franchise owners Dunkin Donuts & HRI Properties..

What I am always amazed about is being even more amazed at the talent of the numerous artists, especially those over 60 and the volume, light & display of their talents they dare show.

Where Art Thou?

 

 

 

 

 

 

Folks have been asking me where is my art in Seasoned en Vieux.  Well I'm lurking. Handling the responsibility of curator, promoter, writer etc has taken up a vast amount of my time and focus.  It hadn't even dawned on me to hang my own work, but I'll put something in it.

 

My aim is to represent the 29 artists in the show, doing things as creatively with limited time and resources.  But something will pop up.

Pop-up Gallery Launching a Talented Cross-Section of Unique Artists’ Works at Dec. 19 Opening Event!

NEW ORLEANS, LA - December 12, 2014

– Galerie 1501 is pleased to present a group ex

hibition of new works featuring all Gallery artists. The “Seasoned en Vieux” exhibit will run from December 16, 2014 – January 10, 2015 with an invitation-only, opening reception on Friday, December 19th from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. This exhibit is a part of the Galerie 1504 pop-up

series, that spotlights various collections of art for a limited time in alternative spaces.

 

 

 

“Seasoned en Vieux" or “A Seasoned View” is a multi-faceted exhibit with a number of thought provoking themes that are meant to dispel the common thought of our society as a whole. One of the most prevalent of these themes being that individual talent does not simply dissipate with age, but rather it grows in wisdom and perspective as time passes. Just as this theme is meant to dispel these specific misconceptions in both the creative realm and general society, it is also intended as a caveat of positive change for senior citizens & their allies, to dispel the myth about the ones who are entering their encore years with panache!

 

 

This Galerie 1504 pop-up showcase will be located at 1501 Canal Street. HRI Properties has kindly donated this temporary exhibit space as a part of their mission to enhance the lives and sensibilities of their tenants, as well as, creatively enhance the current Canal Street

Renaissance process.

 

"Seasoned en Vieux” is made up of various artistic disciplines; ranging from photography, studio art quilts, sculptures, muralists, and wearable art. Seventy-five percent of the 31 artists featured are over the age of 60. This impressive representation of senior artists only exemplifies the thought that true artists never retire…they become more seasoned!

 

 

The exhibit will also feature pieces by New Orleans’ own, Terrence Osburne,  Michele Lambert, fiber artist Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney and renown artist Sheila Phipps. Many of these works are city inspired pieces that reflect the extraordinary history and traditions that have set the city of New Orleans apartfrom anywhere else in the world.

 

 

 

 

“Seasoned en Vieux” will run through January 10, 2015.

 

The artists will be present at the

opening reception Friday, December 19th from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., and by appointment.
