"Changed Waters: Thrown Rocks, Building Castles"


CALL FOR VISUAL ARTISTS: The focus of this exhibition is to showcase works
of art that depict transformation. The process of change takes on many forms,
but what does change look like to you? Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of
Katrina & Rita, the will be held Wednesday, Aug 26, 2015 from 4-7p.m at Rhythm
& Hues Art Space, 1501 Canal St, New Orleans, LA 70112.


SUBMISSIONS: Artists can submit 1-3 works for consideration. Accepted media
can be any 2-D or 3-D media, such as painting, photography, fiber, mixed media,
pencil, ink, prints or sculpture. All work accepted must be ready to hang. Artists
must provide their own easels or pedestals for free standing pieces/sculptures/.
Included with your submission should be one to two short paragraph artist
descriptions of each submitted piece.


Submission deadline is July 1, 2015. All art images must be submitted
electronically. Please e-mail submissions as jpegs to rhythmnhues@gmail.com
for review. Selected works must be delivered to Rhythm & Hues Art Space at
1501 Canal St New Orleans, LA 70112 by July 6, 2015.

Standing in Shadows (no more) Opening Reception Friday March 13th at Ashe Cultural Art Center

The Standing in the Shadows (no more) Quilt exhibition by the Lydia's Purple Cloth Quilting Community will be seen at Ashe Cultural Art Center located at 1724 Oretha Castle Haley, in New Orleans from March 13-Apri 24, 2015.

Then commencing May 9th, these quilts will join a bevy of oher quilters and fiber artists in the  "Lydia's 1st Purple Moon: And the Lioness Spoke" exhibition at the space...Rhythm & Hues @1501 located at 1501 Canal Street  in the historic Texaco building converted into senior living through the genrousity of HRI Properties & the franchise owners of Dunkin' Donuts.   That exhibition will run May 9th-June 20th.



The LPC Quiltting Community classes are regularly held every Tuesday evening from 6-8p and opened to the public.  No experience required. Come and join us as you can!

Quilting continues! We're excited to have more time to work on creations that will hang, not only at Ashé, but also at the Galerie 1501, a pop up gallery located at 1501 Canal Street . How's that for motivation?   The focus in the name change with the classes becoming part of the Ashe's regular lineup is on Lydia, Biblical figure, who was a seller of purple clothShe was very hospitable Christian woman, entrepernurial, creative, quite prosperous, and a visionary. She sold her wares  to the rulers of her time, the clergy and the wealthy.

 

 

The color purple, in ancient times, was and still is a difficult process to produce.  Having that skill allowed Lydia to provide not only for herself sn d her household, but the community around her.  That is why the renaming of the classes as such is appropiate.

 

 

The talented quilting class participants are still creating incredible pieces. Bring your imagination and join in the fun for a series of quilting workshops led by visual poet artist Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney. These workshops will provide participants with opportunities to incorporate their own compelling personal stories as they produce vibrant, jazzy, contemporary, quilted textile collages. Finished quilts will be formally exhibited at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center opening March 3-April April 24,2015 entitled "Standing in the Shadows (no more)". 

 

 

 It will also have a second component at the  Galerie  1501 on Canal Street located in the historic Texaco building.  That exhibition entitled "Lydia's 1st Purple Moon: A Seasoned HeART is located at 1501 Canal Street from March 10-May 10,2015. supported in goodwill by the franchise owners Dunkin Donuts & HRI Properties..

Standing in the Shadows exhibition opens March 6, 2015

 

Well we are coming around the closing our our workshops at Ashe Cultural Art Center.  Shadows no More last day will be January 27th,2015.  I'll then have the fun and the honor to document the quilts and prepare to mount the show on March 6th.

 

The opening reception is on Friday March 6th.

Addendum:  I am delighted to say that our Standing in the SHadows workshops have now become part of Ashe's family!

We have now become "Lydia's Purple Cloth Comunity Group". You are invited to participate in the classes held every Tues from 6-8pm at Ashe.

Part of the vision for Standing in the Shadows (no more) was the foundation for not only these women but others to examine in a creative way a desire not to be swallowed up by shadows, either ones of their own makings but also dynamics others try to force them into.  Quilting, a millineum old tradition dating back to ancient Africa & China is being used as that jump off point. For many, this was a safe, soothing yet forceful way to articulate sometime what could barely be thought of let along being spoken of.

 

Shadows don't always have to be somethng formidable... sometime it is a quiet yearning, a secret desire to do things a bit differently, to try or embrace smething new or see yourself in a different light. 

Now we will have as a sister companion exhibition opening a few days later at Galerie 1501 located at 1501 Canal Street the "Lydia's 1st Purple Moon: You are Ish-Shah" (Hebrew for woman) exhibition that will run from March 10th-May 10th.  You wil see many more pieces of these talented women, other women artists and their allies there in support to the "Standing in the Shadows No More"

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



No Rain on THIS Parae! Seasoned en Vieux opening 12-19-14

"This was better then he had even imagine it to be"

 

 

So sayeth David Abbenante, president of HRI Properties who attended the Seasoned en Vieux opening reception.  Mr. Abbenante has been a very enthusiastic and  supportive of endeavors at the 1501 Canal Senior Apts from the beginning.  Most people normally would think of corporate people as very stiff, staid and about totally the bottom dollar.  David is not like that.

 

Truly I can see his vision  wanting their to be a participatory thread for this  new 6 month old property created for seniors.

 

He wants the entire HRI family and others to see this, the Galerie 1501.  A modest young man, easily approachable and what he can do, he does. 

 

I want to thank Slyvia Robinson, Darrin Jackson, Angelique Christina, Marion Eldridge,Sandra Berry, Lorraine McGee &  HRI's team here at the 1501 Canal-Marais Senior Apts, Lisa, Cassidy& Ronald for a great deal support before /during /after yesterday's event.  The artists & guests did not get the opportunity to meet Ronald or Lisa as she had just had surgery and poor Ronald came in to hang and clean up but was sent home as he was too ill.

 

Ronald maintains the 1501 Canal Senior Apts property and our porter. By the time they called me, it dominoed everything.  That is how instrumental Ronald was climbing ladders, hanging quilts & some of the art etc.  I guess he didn't know it was in his job description!  But we changed lanes quickly, ad- libbing as we went along.

 

I'm a firm believer that there is always a way out of no way!

 

Darrin was the very tall good looking guy who again maintained security, kept water up and did a lot of behind the scene work the day of the reception.  Slyvia, Sandra, & Lorraine McGee were our docents.  In addition, Slyvia acted as my legs & arms when I couldn't do certain things and along with her son acted as couriers when I finally realize I could not anatomically split myself in 7 pieces even though I swore I could. But at the end I have to problem asking for assistance when needed and the artists stepped up, greatly.  One in particular, Sheila Pipps.

 

Lastly to our wonderful soloist, Gwendolyn Smith who performed so beautifully gracing us with that voice!  Prayerfully we will have her return for the closing celebration on January 10th,2015.  Hopefully all our artists, all 29 of them, will be present as well as allies, our Canal Street commercial neighbors, the !501 Canal Street Senior tenants and the buying public. 

 

Hopefully there will be no rain.
