No Rain on THIS Parae! Seasoned en Vieux opening 12-19-14
"This was better then he had even imagine it to be"
So sayeth David Abbenante, president of HRI Properties who attended the Seasoned en Vieux opening reception. Mr. Abbenante has been a very enthusiastic and supportive of endeavors at the 1501 Canal Senior Apts from the beginning. Most people normally would think of corporate people as very stiff, staid and about totally the bottom dollar. David is not like that.
Truly I can see his vision wanting their to be a participatory thread for this new 6 month old property created for seniors.
He wants the entire HRI family and others to see this, the Galerie 1501. A modest young man, easily approachable and what he can do, he does.
I want to thank Slyvia Robinson, Darrin Jackson, Angelique Christina, Marion Eldridge,Sandra Berry, Lorraine McGee & HRI's team here at the 1501 Canal-Marais Senior Apts, Lisa, Cassidy& Ronald for a great deal support before /during /after yesterday's event. The artists & guests did not get the opportunity to meet Ronald or Lisa as she had just had surgery and poor Ronald came in to hang and clean up but was sent home as he was too ill.
Ronald maintains the 1501 Canal Senior Apts property and our porter. By the time they called me, it dominoed everything. That is how instrumental Ronald was climbing ladders, hanging quilts & some of the art etc. I guess he didn't know it was in his job description! But we changed lanes quickly, ad- libbing as we went along.
I'm a firm believer that there is always a way out of no way!
Darrin was the very tall good looking guy who again maintained security, kept water up and did a lot of behind the scene work the day of the reception. Slyvia, Sandra, & Lorraine McGee were our docents. In addition, Slyvia acted as my legs & arms when I couldn't do certain things and along with her son acted as couriers when I finally realize I could not anatomically split myself in 7 pieces even though I swore I could. But at the end I have to problem asking for assistance when needed and the artists stepped up, greatly. One in particular, Sheila Pipps.
Lastly to our wonderful soloist, Gwendolyn Smith who performed so beautifully gracing us with that voice! Prayerfully we will have her return for the closing celebration on January 10th,2015. Hopefully all our artists, all 29 of them, will be present as well as allies, our Canal Street commercial neighbors, the !501 Canal Street Senior tenants and the buying public.
Hopefully there will be no rain.
The first gathering in the beginning.

Seasoned en Vieux: Hear! Hear!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GALERIE 1504 PRESENTS “SEASONED EN VIEUX” WITH AN
INVITATION-ONLY RECEPTION FOR SPECIAL GUESTS AND
MEDIA
Pop-up Gallery Launching a Talented Cross-Section of Unique Artists’
Works at Dec. 19 Opening Event
NEW ORLEANS, LA - December 15, 2014 – Galerie 1504 is pleased to present a
group exhibition of new works featuring all Gallery artists. The “Seasoned en Vieux” exhibit will run from December 19, 2014 – January 11, 2015 with an invitation-only, opening reception on Friday, December 19th from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. This exhibit is a part of the Galerie 1501 pop-up series, spotlighting various collections of art for a limited time in alternative spaces.
“Seasoned en Vieux" or “A Seasoned View” is a multi-faceted exhibit with a number of thought provoking themes that are meant to dispel the common thought of our society as a whole. One of the most prevalent of these themes being that individual talent does not simply dissipate with age, but rather it grows in wisdom and perspective as time passes. Just as this theme is meant to dispel these specific misconceptions in both the creative realm and general society, it is also intended as a caveat of positive change for
senior citizens & their allies, to dispel the myth about the ones who are entering their encore years with panache!
This Galerie 1501 pop-up showcase will be located at 1501 Canal Street on the first floor of the historic Texaco building. HRI Properties has kindly donated this temporary exhibit space as a part of their mission to enhance the lives and sensibilities of their tenants, as well as, creatively enhance the current Canal Street Renaissance process.
“Seasoned en Vieux” is made up of various artistic disciplines; such as photography, studio art, quilts, sculptures, muralists, and wearable art. Seventy-five percent of the twenty-nine artists featured are over the age of 60. This impressive representation of senior artists only exemplifies the thought that true artists never retire...they only become more seasoned!
The exhibit will also feature pieces by New Orleans’ own, Terrence Osburne, Michele Lambert, "visual poet" artist Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney and acclaimed artist Sheila Phipps. Many of these works are city inspired pieces that reflect the extraordinary history and traditions that have set the city of New Orleans apart from anywhere else in the world.
“Seasoned en Vieux” will run through January 12, 2015. The artists will be present at the opening reception Friday, December 19th from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., and by appointment.

Even The Sun Shed Tears: Karen Hurst Johnson 1952-2011
Even the Sun Shed Tears
Karen & Timothy Hurst Johnson
Karen fell asleep in death last night... She was a woman of some kind!
Karen loved New Orleans & lived here for qwhile doing some work for the Villa Treme African American Museum & Amistad Research Center in the late 1990's. We had made plans for her & her husband to come down for a visit this summer.

My heart ♥ goes out to her family...Isaiah 65-17-23.
Who will be my best friend now?
I can't breathe right now...
"And He will wipe every tear from their eyes & death will be no more, neither mourning nor outcry nor pain be any more. The former things will have passed away". Rev 21:3-4.
What a blessing is my friend...
In Memory of Karen Hurst Johnson
By Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney ©11
What a blessing is my friend!
Who listens to you...
And loves you...
Through thick and thin.
That patiently waits for you
As you go along through murky waters.
Angst, trials and trivails.
That sees your world...
Though enchanted eyes and marvel.
Such delight in such a friend!
Does such a one comes oft?
Not..
But when they do,
it can cleanse eons of desolation.
Friends like Karen...
Who themselves so cool.
From far away ...
And in the neighborhood.
Stretching her love...
To those who are out.
Not part of the in crowd
These who are not.
Just makes you want to shout!
The ones who are forgotten
Or no one who desires...
To know their hearts replete.
But Karen works through the mire...
And sees the jewel complete.
Simple and unpretentious...
She has no guile.
But deep, deep pools of wisdom.
And an amazing capacity to make one smile.
Despite all your sorrow.
What a blessing is my friend.
Who loves you through thick and thin.
My heartelt prayer to my God...
For permitting me
To see.
What is to be.
And what she gives...
Without question..
Without ridicule...
Without the requisite resume...
And background check...
That far too many demand.
Before love is given...
By command.
There is no pretense...
Flawed jewel that she is.
She is my friend ...
To the end.
And she sends...
Her love to you.

Gardenias and Lilies For Karen
By Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney ©11
I have gardenias and lilies to enfold you…
And relish in fragrant clouds girdling us.
More composed then an early morn…
In the temples of Tunisia.
Or the cooling caverns of Carlsbad.
And more vivid then the complexions of Santiago…
Kuba…
At the zenith of Zaire.
So are my memories of that tempo…
While we were still at once…
My mind’s eye wanders and receives…
The heart expanse follows my North Star.
My yearning strains…
O Wandering Moon!
Splendid, glorious orbs emanating a sumptuous blaze!
On a backdrop…
So deep and rich.
While I desire to be…
I forget not.
Those twenty years of nights…
Of thine to me.
I kneel in Rosas Blanca…
Amidst a silky canopy.
Intertwined redolent reflections of gladness…
And long ago sadness.
To know my sorrow is to declare…
Missing you,
Missing you…
Missing you.
The flowers would weep…
Indeed!
For the life I threw away was one I needed to.
But not you…
Never you.
As my sojourn reconvenes…
I’ll take shards of you with me.
And leave crystal fragments of me behind.
O cultivates the fruits of your yearnings.
Placing the harvest in an urn…
Marking it Graceful Manners.
Please do recall in a special vase…
Having encased recollected musings.
Keeping it safe with supremeness…
And leniency…
In a vial of gardenias and lilies…
That will forever more,
Always reside with you.
